Lichtenfels- The German "Basket Town"
Historic Centre, Staffelberg and Basket Market
Lichtenfels is uniquely situated at the intersection of old, fascinating cultural and natural landscapes. It is widely known as the German "Basket Town". Including the famous Basket Market, the Basket-Town-Queen, Germany's only school for basketwork design, featuring the biggest and the smallest baskets worldwide, the German Museum of Baskets... - you see, here it's all about the old tradition of basket-weaving.
The historic center of Lichtenfels, its baroque town hall, the beautiful middle-class houses, the town palace, the two gate towers as well as the maintained remains of the medieval town fortifications invite you to join a guided tour or to go for a walk. But there is much more to discover underground, in the subterranean corridors.
The famous "Franconian Triumvirate" lies straight in front of the gates of Lichtenfels: The legendary Staffelberg, the splendid monastery Banz and the singular basilica Vierzehnheiligen, an architectural masterpiece by Balthasar Neumann.
The well-known Basket Market of Lichtenfels, which is a mixture of a historic festival and special market, attracts thousands of visitors from all over Europe each year. It always takes place on the third Friday, Saturday and Sunday in September.
